Essential reading for anyone managing an air conditioning system
It’s a subject that’s been on dedicated facilities managers’ minds for some time now, but maybe not something with wide enough recognition or understanding. Office managers or team staff responsible for the air conditioning system at work might need to prick up their ears, because air-con systems are going to need some attention, and acting now could save time and money, by being prepared for the changes.
Refrigeration gas R22, historically used in air-conditioning systems for years, will be completely phased out by the end of this year. Banned already since 2001 for the use in new air conditioning equipment, recycled R22 is still used for maintenance and servicing of units using the gas. However, by the end of 2014 all use of R22 will be banned.
In case the impact of that hasn’t quite hit home, the bottom line is that any equipment using R22 will be unserviceable after the end of the year. Firms operating older air conditioning units that still use R22 will no longer be able to use this refrigerant in maintenance and breakdown situations, making these units un-repairable. If you haven’t already addressed this within your own business, it’s definitely time to take action.
So what can you do?
With anything, there is always help if you need it. There are alternatives and you may well have already looked into these, but if you haven’t, or this whole R22 phase-out is catching you a bit on the hop, then a little friendly guidance probably wouldn’t go amiss. Guardian are only too happy to offer some support and suggestions – their advice can help you stay informed, and this professional support is a free consultation service.
Replacing systems can be costly and the conversation about finance may seem daunting, but Guardian can help you here too. By organising finance solutions through Mitsubishi Electric the cost of a new installation can be spread, helping your finance team with cash flow and helping you to keep your facilities running smoothly, helping to make the switch a little less taxing.
As well as considering the impact of rising costs as last minute demand overwhelms suppliers, the issue of availability is key. Acting now will ensure continuity of service and long term energy savings (up to 40%).
Priority should be given to business-critical areas such as data centres/server rooms etc. and where air conditioning is used as the only source of heating. There are over 750,000 units in operation in the UK, without a pro-active plan businesses could suffer time delays due to lack of equipment or engineers availability. It’s important to be prepared for this, and not leave it late to act.
